On the 26th of January (Australia Day, let's not forget), ten Masaryk Grammar School students engaged in a dramatic showdown to determine the winner of the senior section of the school's conversation competition. In addition to the usual bragging rights and the adulation of schoolmates, the winner of the competition also earned the great honour and opportunity of representing this esteemed institution in the Pilsen round of the competition and, fingers crossed, possibly beyond. Perhaps this was just the first step on a great journey that will lead all the way to the national finals.

The competition was fierce, the atmosphere was electric and the judges were resolute in their impartiality. Each student managed to hold their nerve and to display an impressive command of English, all while expressing their thoughts on such endlessly fascinating topics as health, crime, media, occupations and shopping. The judges' task was an arduous one but, in the end, there could only be one winner. And that could only be Renáta Chalupská, who edged out the runner-up, Zuzana Káčereková, by half a point. We wish her well for the next round.

Final standings - top 3:
1. Renáta Chalupská (SPA) 26/30
2. Zuzana Káčereková (SXA) 25.5/30
3. Thao Chi Vu (SXA) 23.5/30
