On Tuesday, 6th October 2015, SPA and SPB classes were on an excursion to Most and surrounding areas.

The aim of the excursion was getting to know some information about mining activities in these areas. Coal Safari is a project of the Czech Coal Group launched  in 2009 to inform the public not only about the mining itself but also about reclamation activities.

We chose the route number 3, which is called the Landscape Reclamation Route. Our guide explained to us that mining activities enormously damage the surrounding landscape and, therefore, the involved company has to restore the landscape affected by coal mining.  Reclamation must be planned and designed to be ecologically balanced. That means there has to be fields, forests, meadows and water bodies. Companies have to carry out the reclamation at their own cost. We saw several places, such as the Benedikt relaxation area (former quarry) and Hippodrome (racing course), the Vršany Quarry viewing terrace, the Most Lake, and finally, the area of the deanery church which was moved to its new place in the 1970s.

Even though the weather could have been better, it was really an interesting excursion.
